Wax prep and aftercare
Most of a good wax is what you do around it.
Skin that's rested, clean and unscrubbed takes a wax well. This page is the short version of what we tell every client.
If any of these lists fit you, tell us when you book. We would rather rebook a visit than wax skin that isn't ready.

Before
Getting ready, step by step
- 01
Step 1: Let the hair reach a quarter inch
About the length of a grain of rice. Don't trim it, and don't shave in the week before.
- 02
Step 2: Pause scrubs, peels and acids
Stop them on the area two days ahead. They thin the skin's top layer, which makes a wax pull harder.
- 03
Step 3: Come with clean, dry skin
No lotion, oil or makeup on the area, and no hot shower or sauna right beforehand.
- 04
Step 4: Tell us what has changed
A new medicine, a sunburn, a recent peel or a skin product you've started. It takes a minute and changes the plan.
What to avoid
What to avoid, before your visit and then after
Before your visit
Scrubs, peels and acids for two days
Sun, a tanning bed or a sunburn
Retinoid on the area that week
Lotion, oil or makeup on the day
A hot shower, bath or sauna that day
After your visit
Heat, steam and hot tubs for 24 hours
Tight clothes and friction on the area
Scrubs, acids and anything scented for two days
Sun, tanning and pools for two days
Picking at or scratching the skin
Who should wait
When we ask you to wait and rebook
Rebooking is never a penalty. Tell us before the day, and we find a new time.
Skin that isn't ready
Sunburn, windburn, broken or irritated skin, or skin that is still healing.
A recent procedure
A peel, a facial with strong acids or another skin procedure in the past few weeks.
A prescription for your skin
A retinoid taken by mouth or put on the skin. Ask your doctor before booking a wax.
A condition or a pregnancy
A condition that slows healing, such as diabetes, or a pregnancy. Ask your doctor first, and we follow what they say.
Aftercare
The first 24 hours, then two more days
- 0124 hours
Step 1: The first day
Keep the area cool, loose and alone. No heat, no friction, nothing scented. A cool, clean cloth is fine.
- 02Days two and three
Step 2: The next two days
Skip scrubs, acids, pools and sun. Wear loose clothes, and wash with plain water and a mild cleanser.
- 03Any time
Step 3: When to call us
If the skin is very red, swollen, blistered or sore after the first day, tell us. Call your doctor or go to urgent care if it is severe.
If your skin reacts
Skin can react to wax, tint or adhesive, even when everything went well. If you notice burning, swelling, a rash or blurred vision, tell us and call your doctor or go to urgent care.
Questions about prep and aftercare
Can I shower before a wax?
Yes, a warm one earlier in the day. Skip a hot shower, bath or sauna right before, because heat makes skin more tender.
Should I exfoliate the day before?
No. Stop two days ahead and don't scrub for two days after.
Can I go in the sun after?
Avoid sun, tanning beds and pools for two days. Covered by loose clothing is fine.
What if I'm unsure if my skin is ready?
Call or text, and describe it. We will say whether to come or rebook.
